EU health insurance card

  • As of 1 August 2014, you must use the blue EU health insurance card when travelling to an EU member state, Norway, Iceland, Switzerland or Liechtenstein. You still have to use the yellow health insurance card when visiting your GP in Denmark.
  • With the blue EU health insurance card you have the right to the same health insurance as the citizens of the country in which you are travelling.
  • The EU health insurance card is free of charge. It is valid for 5 years. You must order the card online. The card will be sent to you within 2 - 3 weeks. 
  • Udbetaling Danmark is responsible for processing applications for the blue EU health insurance card, as well as for issuing the card. If you have any questions regarding the blue EU health insurance card, you can find answers at borger.dk/EU-sygesikringskort or contact Udbetaling Danmark
  • You must use NemID.

Change GP

  • If you wish to register with a new GP who is able to take on new patients and whose practice is located less than 15 km from your home address, you have the right to home visits by the GP in the event of illness.
  • If you choose a GP where the distance is greater than 15 km from your home address, you do not have the right to home visits by the GP in the event of illness.
  • (Remember to confirm that you are aware that your choice of GP means that the GP will not conduct home visits in the event of illness).
  • It costs DKK 190 to change GP. The change will be effective 14 days after payment.
  • You must order the change of GP online.

Change insurance group

  • There are two insurance groups and you can see which group you are in on your health insurance card.
  • If you change from insurance group 2 to 1, the GP must be able to take on new patients. If you choose a GP whose practice is located less than 15 km from your home address, you have the right to home visits by the GP in the event of illness.
  • If you choose a GP where the distance is greater than 15 km from your home address, you do not have the right to home visits by the GP in the event of illness.
  • (Remember to confirm that you are aware that your choice of GP means that the GP will not conduct home visits in the event of illness).
  • It costs DKK 190 to change insurance group. The change will be effective 14 days after payment.
