New health insurance card

You must bring your health insurance card (the yellow health insurance card) with you when you have an appointment with a doctor, dentist, physiotherapist, chemist, etc.

If you lose your health insurance card or if it is damaged, you must order a new card online.

The card will be sent to you within 14 days.

You have to use NemID

What is a health insurance card?

The health insurance card is the name of the yellow health insurance card, and entitles you to health services. You must bring your health insurance card with you when you have an appointment with your GP, a specialist, dentist, dental hygienist, physiotherapist, chiropodist, chiropractor, psychologist, chemist, hospital or the municipal authority.

Your name, civil registration number and contact information for your GP appear on the card.

Who receives a health insurance card?

Everyone with residence in Denmark is covered by health legislation and receives a health insurance card.

Newborn babies are automatically sent a health insurance card after they have been christened or given a name.

Order a new health insurance card

You must order a new health insurance card online. If you are not able to do this yourself, you can get help at the municipal citizen service centre or at the library. You can also order a new health insurance card for a child living at home until they are 18 years of age. If you are more than 15 years of age, you can order a new health insurance card yourself. This requires that you have NemID.

What does a new health insurance card cost?

It costs DKK 190 (2016) to get a new health insurance card if, for instance:

  • your health insurance card has been lost
  • your health insurance card is less than 4 years old and is damaged
  • you wish to change GP or insurance group
  • you change your name.

You can get a new health insurance card free of charge if:

  • you reach the age of 15 and wish to change GP
  • you move to a new address
  • your GP closes his or her practice
  • your GP’s practice is split into several units
  • your health insurance card is more than 4 years old and there are cracks or breaks in the card
  • there is a defect in the magnetic stripe that is not caused by inappropriate storage or wear. In such cases, you must contact your local council
  • you change your name through marriage
  • a child under the age of 15 shall have a new health insurance card because the parent or guardian to whom the child is attached has changed the information on their health insurance card.

Temporary health insurance card

It normally takes around two weeks to get a new health insurance card. In special circumstances, however, the local council can issue a temporary document if you need it. This is free of charge.
